Red Devils and Giants go toe-to-toe in tight contest at AJ Bell

The equally impressive Salford Red Devils and Huddersfield Giants were both looking for their second victory of the season at they met at the AJ Bell Stadium.

Salford looked as if they’d crossed the line first on the 5th minute, as Ken Sio dived over on the right hand edge. However, the winger hit the touch line before he grounded the ball

The Giants nearly grabbed a try of their ow to open the scores but Joe Wardle couldn’t quite dive on Aidan Sezer’s grubbed kick quick enough as it dribbled over the dead-ball line.

It was the home-side who crossed the line next, as both teams looked to open the scoring.

It was Ken Sio once again, but this time, a great tackle from Louis Senior dragged the Australian into touch just before the ball was grounded. After 14 minutes the game remained 0-0.

After much back-and-forth it was the visitors who took the lead as hooker Adam O’Brien caught the Red Devils napping to sneak under the posts.

Salford pulled a try back on 24 minutes, and it was third time lucky for Sio, who was on the receiving end of a Kris Welham pass to score his second of the season.

Huddersfield nearly pulled ahead once more as on a fifth tackle, Lee Gaskell ran the ball but was pulled down short of the line.

HALF-TIME: Salford Red Devils 4-6 Huddersfield Giants

Salford started the game on the front foot, as Niall Evalds attempted to ground a Tyrone McCarthy, but Jordan Turner reached the ball first for a goal-line drop-out.

They ran the ball straight back at the Giants and the Huddersfield defence couldn’t hold the Red Devil’s out this time as Dan Sarginson powered through Jordan Turner to score.

In the build up to the try, Kevin Brown picked up a knock but did manage to continue.

The Giants hit back within just a minutes, as ill-discipline allowed them to attack the Salford line.

This time, a beautiful looping pass from Aiden Sezer landed perfectly in the hands of Louis Senior who slid over in the corner to level the scores.

With 15 minutes to go, the scores were still level and both sides looked to lock the game down and secure the two points.

Neither team seemed to be able to able to take a grip of the game themselves, but a dropped ball from Matty English gave Salford the chance the take control.

Tui Lolohea did attempt a one-pointer but sliced the ball wide to let Huddersfield off the hook.

A head-butt from Kevin Brown on Jordan Turner in the tackle was missed by both referee and touch-judge, but after some information in his ear through video referee Liam Moore, the Red Devils half-back picked up a yellow card after a scuffle between the two teams.

The Giants attacked the Salford line from deep and Niall Evalds gave the visitors further field position after knocking-on in front of his own-line.

Lee Mossop conceded a penalty for offside in front of his own posts, which allowed Aiden Sezer to slot a goal for a two point lead with less than two minutes remaining.

With a minute to go, Salford picked up the ball in their own half, Pauli Pauli offloaded to Kris Welham, who released Ken Sio down the right hand touch line.

He kicked ahead, but Darnell McIntosh beat the winger to the ball, and was then dragged into touch by Sio.

Salford rushed to the scrum but the hooter blew before they could set it, and James Childs blew the final whistle.
