The Huddersfield Giants faced Warrington Wolves at the Totally Wicked Stadium with both sides looking to go to level at the top of the table alongside Catalans and Wigan.
The game didn’t start too well for the Giants due to an injury to Matty English after a high tackle from Ben Murdoch-Masila.
Due to the nature of the challenge, English was stretchered off the field with his neck in a brace. Murdoch-Masila also found himself in a spot of bother as he was sent to the sin-bin.
Despite a man disadvantage, the Wire were the first to take the lead following a high tackle from Aiden Sezer on Gareth Widdop.
This allowed Stefan Ratchford to add two points from the tee.
The lead didn’t last too long though as in the 12th minute, Ukama Ta’ai picked up a short pass from Sezer and busted through the tackle of Widdop and stretched over the line to score.
In the 17th minute, Adam O’Brien picked up the ball from the ruck and dove over from a short distance.
However, due to Blake Austin going down with a weak-looking head knock, Thaler pulled the try back for the ball to be replayed.
A few minutes later, Austin was then sent to the sin-bin for a trip on a Giants player and once again Huddersfield attacked a short numbered Wire defence.
With 25 minutes gone, and still a man short, the Wolves hit back as Widdop’s dribbled kick through was judged perfectly by Ben Currie as he beat both McGillvary and Ta’ai to the ball and score.
The Giants should have retaken the lead just after the half-hour mark when Leroy Cudjoe broke through the defence on the right edge and had just Ratchford to beat.
Unfortunately, his pass to McGillvary was too flat and the chance went begging.
Ukama Ta’ai was the next player to leave the field for the Giants after his ankle knock was too bad for his to continue.
With two minutes to go until the break, Warrington were penalised once again which allowed Sezer to convert a penalty to level up the scores.
HALF-TIME: Huddersfield Giants 8-8 Warrington Wolves
After just 100 seconds, the Wolves took the lead again as Widdop break on the left edge after a dubious inside pass from Toby King and then stepped past Ashton Golding to score.
The Giants were then reduced to just 14 fit players after Adam Walne collided with the shoulder of his own teammate Sam Wood.
In the 53rd minute, it looked as though Tom Holmes had picked up a try for the Giants after Sam Hewitt caused Ratchford to drop the ball in the air, and the half-back took advantage of the loose ball, duck under the desperate Wire tackles.
However, Hewitt also knocked the ball-on as the attempted to claim the ball so the try was disallowed.
With Ratchford having knocked-on first, the Giants attacked down their right just a few tackles later and McGillvary found himself in plenty of space and ran 10-metres to score.
Wire extended their lead once again though as Blake Austin collected Holmes’ fifth tackle kick, and then released Toby King on the left-wing, the centre then offloaded to Tom Lineham who outpaced Cudjoe to score.
With 10 minutes to go, the Giants were still trailing by six but that quickly changed when Oliver Russell was the recipient of a great offload from Cudjoe and burrowed over the line.
The young half-back then converted his own try to level up the scores with five minutes left.
In the 77th minute, Austin collected the ball 35 metres out at first receiver and struck a sweet drop-goal to make the score 18-19.
The Wolves managed to hold firm in defence and for the second game in a row, the Giants lost by just a solitary point.
