A depleted Huddersfield Giants faced a St Helens side also missing a few key players, as they looked to couple a league double over the 2019 Super League Champions.
The Saints opened the scores in just the fourth minute as Aaron Smith’s dribbled kick through bounced back off Matty English into the hands of Lachlan Coote, much to the misfortune of the Giants, who slid over to score.
After holding firm for a rough ten-minute spell in defence, Huddersfield finally folded.
An offload from Walmsley found Aaron Smith in plenty of space and the hooker slid over under the posts.
Just before the 20th minute, it looked as though the Giants had hit back.
Oliver Russell’s kick towards the corner of Dominic Young looked to bounce off Matty Costello and the ball was dived on by Sam Hewitt.
However, on second viewing, Young was deemed to have knocked on and the score remained 0-12.
Four minutes later, a loose offload from Tom Holmes was punished when Regan Grace picked up the ball and raced 60-metres to score.
Just before the half-hour mark, the away side were 20-points ahead.
English was penalised for a dangerous tackle and Coote converted from in front of the posts.
HALF-TIME: Huddersfield Giants 0-20 St Helens
The second half didn’t start too bright for the Saints as Aaron Smith left the field for a head injury assessment.
Just a minute later, Owen Trout stripped the ball from Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook in a brilliant one-on-one and race away to score under the posts on his debut.
McCarthy-Scarsbrook then made up for his early error and put his side back in total control on the half-hour mark.
James Bentley showed a little bit of footwork and put the forward through gap and run to score to the let of the uprights.
Five minutes later, Regan Grace picked up his second after a cut-out ball from Jonny Lomax found the Welsh winger who accelerated away and stepped past Louis Senior with ease to score.
Straight from kick-off, the Saints scored through their other winger.
Amor offloaded to Smith, who put Jack Welsby through a gap, and the half-back then pushed the ball to Matty Costello to push the lead past 30.
Lachlan Coote was the next to pick up his brace as he chose to run the ball and dummy to get past Jordan Turner to score.
The dominance continued from the reigning champions as Dominic Peyroux picked up an inside ball from Bentley, and stepped past three would-be tacklers, before beating the tackle of Senior to crash under the posts.
The ninth try from the Saints came in the very next set as Walmsley charged towards the posts and looked to ground the ball against the bottom of the sticks.
Despite a potential double movement, the try was confirmed and the Saints moved past the half-century.
The Saints had the ball in the final seconds but Smith was wrapped up in the tackle.
