Rhinos pip Giants in dramatic game

Huddersfield Giants faced off against West Yorkshire rivals Leeds Rhinos, as they looked to get revenge for a gold-point defeat earlier in the season.

The Giants started the game in great fashion as they managed to get themselves over the line in just the fourth minute.

Adam O’Brien picked the ball up from dummy-half and charged towards the try-line before popping the ball to Matty English.

English brushed off a number of Leeds Rhinos tackles before hitting and spinning off four Rhinos to ground the ball.

The front-rower soon got himself a rest, but not through a substitution.

Ill-discipline from the Giants allowed the Rhinos to charge up the field, and English was sent for ten-minutes in the bin.

Leeds looked to make the extra-man count, but Richie Myler’s pass to Ash Handley drifted forward and Huddersfield still lead 0-6.

Referee Scott Mikalauskas was struggling after seeming to lose his voice. He was given time to recover though as Adam O’Brien picked up a heavy neck injury just before the 20-minute mark.

While O’Brien was stretchered off the field, touch judge James Child switched places with Mikalauskas, and the players could now hear the man in the middle.

James Child first noticeable involvement of the game was to award the Giants a penalty 50-metres up the pitch following a late tackle from Brad Dwyer on Aidan Sezer.

The penalty was kickable, and Oliver Russell converted from the tee to make it an eight-point lead for the Giants.

The Giants forced a goal-line drop-out, which Myler attempted to kick short.

However, the ball didn’t break the ten-metre line.

The Giants could have taken the two, but opted to push for a second try.

With five minutes to go until the break, the Rhinos were called offside and Russell took another kick at goal to push to a 10-point lead.

HALF-TIME: Leeds Rhinos 0-10 Huddersfield Giants

The Rhinos started the brighter in the second half, as the rain was now hammering down.

Brad Dwyer’s kick ricocheted off James Gavet, and the hooker regather before throwing a pass out to Konrad Hurrell who did well to ground the ball in the slippery conditions.

The Rhinos were certainly on top of the game now, keep up the pressure on the Giants.

In the 56th minute, they levelled up as Robert Lui and Richie Myler combined on the right-hand edge to shift the ball to Tom Briscoe who slid over for a try.

Luke Gale converted from the touchline to make it 12-10.

Just after the hour mark, Lui was penalised for a dangerous tackle, and Oliver Russell levelled once again from the boot.

Harry Newman believed he’d scored in the 65th minute, but as he was crossing the line, the ball was stolen in the tackle, which meant the Giants held firm but Gale was given the opportunity to kick for the lead once again.

However, the kick from the touchline drifted wide.

Luke Gale attempted a drop-goal just before the 70 minute mark, but the ball drifted wide under pressure from Holmes and Lawrence.

Despite Sezer setting up for a drop-goal, Holmes kicked into the in-goal area, but Lui did enough to get the bal over the dead-ball line ahead of Jake Wardle.

Both Sezer and Gale attempted drop-goals but neither hit the target for their respective sides.

A mistake from Darnell McIntosh gave the Rhinos good field position to attack the line, and this time, Gale finally struck well enough to take a one-point lead for his side.

Direct from the kick-off, Leeds believed they had scored.

Myler dummied, and ran direct at Ashton Golding to get over the line.

However, the full-back dropped the ball over the line and the Giants were still in the game.

Handling errors from Huddersfield in the rain was making it easy for the Rhinos to stay camped inside the Giants half and managed to hold on.
