Dragons labour past Titans for back-to-back wins

With both teams only having one win so far this season, this was a chance to move further away from the bottom of the ladder as Gold Coast Titans faced St George Illawarra Dragons at Suncorp Stadium.

Just two minutes into the match, the Titans took an early lead, after Josh Kerr made late contact with Ash Taylor after a kick.

Taylor then duly converted a penalty shot at goal for 2-0.

With 15 minutes gone, and Goal Coast still only leading by two, the Dragons were pressuring the Titans line, forcing multiple goal-line drop-outs.

On tackle two, the ball found Zac Lomax who caught the ball outside Brian Kelly, raced through the gap left by the centre, stepped past Corey Thompson and slid up the posts for the lead.

Corey Thompson had added some much-needed excitement in attack for the Titans, but they lost him for 15 minutes just before half-time after he left the field for a Head Injury Assessment following a high tackle.

After Phillip Sami failed the gather a high kick, the Dragons attacked from a ten-metre scrum in centre-field.

On tackle four, Corey Norman took the ball to the line and threw a beautiful looping pass right to Mikaele Ravalawa, and slide over to score but not without nearly messing up his opportunity and going over the dead-ball line before dotting down.

Lomax converted once again to give St George a ten-point lead.

Ravalawa did make an error a few minutes later though, as he knocked on in a carry just metres from his own line.

This gave the Titans the chance to pull a score back. Unfortunately for Justin Holbrook’s side, Jordan Pereira easily claimed Adam Fogerty’s kick to the corner ahead of Anthony Don.

In the final minute of the half, the Dragons found themselves with the ball, and after the Titans allowed a fifth tackle kick to bounce, the visitors won a penalty after Gold Coast were caught offside, and extended their lead to 12 through the boot of Lomax.

HALF-TIME: Gold Coast Titans 2-14 St George Illawarra Dragons

Ill-discipline at the start of the second period from the Titans meant they couldn’t gain momentum and were struggling to get a hold of the game.

The gave the Dragons a chance to attack and they extended their lead further.

The ball was shifted left, into the hands of Adam Clune, and the 25-year old rookie threw a pass over the top of Anthony Don to Jordan Pereira and the winger dove over in the corner.

The next ten minutes became very much a midfield battle between the two sides.

That was until just after the hour mark when the Dragons set up camp deep inside the Gold Cast half once again.

From centre-field, the ball was moved left and Jacob Host collected a short ball from Ben Hunt to charge through a number of Titans tacklers. However, Hunt’s pass was deemed to have travelled forward.

With just under ten minutes to go, Adam Clune was hit slightly late by Keegan Hipgrave and had to leave the field for a HIA, meaning he would not return to the field.

The Titans had been left with just one substitute after injuries to Sami and Young Tonumaipea and Jaimin Jolliffe, which the Dragons looked to take advantage of.

Neither side was making the most of their chances with the ball in hand, with a number of errors in midfield, slowly grinding the game down in the final minutes.

That changed with three minutes to go, as Ash Taylors high kick was tapped back by Tyrone Peachey, to Proctor, who then passed inside to Tanah Boyd, who slid over.

Taylor converted quickly for 8-20.

Peachey was then penalised for a high tackle on Matt Dufty inside the 20-metre line, which allowed Zac Lomax to attempt a kick at goal.

The penalty was unsuccessful back with a goal-line drop out in their favour, just ran the ball back upfield and the game was over.
