Roosters thump Broncos with 10-try showcase

Things couldn’t get any tougher for Brisbane Broncos as they travelled to the Sydney Cricket Ground to face the Roosters, who were looking to hold onto their top-four spot.

The Roosters were the first to score in the fifth minute, as Sitili Tupouniua picked up a short ball and stretched over the line after beating the tackle of Patrick Carrigan.

Ten minutes later, a second Roosters try came from the back of ill-discipline from the Broncos.

Isaac Liu strolled through the lacklustre defence from Cory Paix and touched down under the posts.

Kyle Flanagan converted both for 12-0.

James Tedesco hadn’t scored a try in ten weeks, but thanks to Tupouniua offloading to Flanagan, it allowed a two-on-one with just Darius Boyd to beat and the full-back was on hand in support to score under the posts.

Moments later, the Roosters were over again as Flanagan ran at the Broncos line, straightened up and popped the ball to Tupouniua to charged over for his second.

The Broncos wouldn’t be nilled though, and Kotoni Staggs proved how valuable he is to Brisbane as he picked off a loose pass from Drew Hutchinson and outpaced Josh Morris to score under the posts.

HALF-TIME: Sydney Roosters 24-6 Brisbane Broncos

It took the Roosters just three and a half minutes, and Josh Morris joined the party.

Hutchinson ran down the short side, offloaded to Cordner who drew in Herbie Farnworth and released Josh Morris to dive past Staggs in the corner.

Sydney turned entertainers once again, as Josh Morris palmed off Brodie Croft, found Tedesco inside, and with just Boyd to beat, released Daniel Tupou for try number six.

The Roosters nearly scored a third in less than ten minutes as Darius Boyd had the ball stripped from him by Joseph Manu, and then grounded by the young centre.

However, the ball was knocked on by Manu as the ball was stripped to keep the scores at 34-6.

The Broncos had a decent spell just before the hour mark, and David Fifita showed Gold Coast Titans fans what they could expect as he pushed off both Freddy Lussick and Hutchinson and ran around the score by the posts.

The Roosters made sure they’d hit 40-points though as Nat Butcher broke through the middle of the pack after scooping up a loose ball and accelerated away for a try.

In the 70th minute, Josh Morris picked up his second.

Flanagan and Hutchinson combined to allow Tedesco to tap the ball onto the centre, who stepped back inside off his left foot and walked in.

Tupou was the next to pick up his double thanks to a flat pass from Tedesco gave the winger the space needed to ground the ball in the corner.

The Roosters finished off in style, as Taukeiaho offloaded to Tedesco who then slapped the ball to Brett Morris who joined his brother on the scoresheet.
