Titans claim bragging rights, with Broncos losing again

The Gold Coast Titans looked to move onto two wins as they faced local rivals Brisbane Broncos, who had lost four in a row themselves.

The Broncos were the first to go close and looked certain to score.

Tesi Niu broke the line following an offload from Tevita Pangai Junior, and with just Corey Thompson to beat, passed wide to Herbie Farnworth, who was wrapped up by the full-back. All Niu had to do was throw a dummy to the centre and run the ball and he would have scored himself.

Minutes later, Ash Taylor put the Titans on the board as he ran the ball from dummy-half, and burrowed his way over on the short side on the right edge.

Despite the Broncos efforts to get over and level the scores but the Titans did enough to hold on.

In the 20th minute, the Titans extended their lead, as Fogarty passed the ball to Keegan Hipgrave, who tapped the ball quickly outside, it bounced to the arms of Anthony Don, who then slid over in the corner to score.

The next ten minutes remained extremely even between the two sides, with Brisbane still unable to break through the Titans, and the Gold Coast slightly on top in terms of territory.

That territory soon turned to points as Ash Taylor’s kick wasn’t gathered by Niu, with the loose ball being picked up by Tyrone Peachey, who popped the ball to Sam Lisone who, in turn, powered under the posts to pick up try number three for the Gold Coast.

With half an hour gone, the Titans stepped up yet another gear, forcing multiple goal-line drop-outs from Brisbane.

They couldn’t quite find that fourth try, as an error from Anthony Don let the home-side off the hook.

With three minutes to go until the break, Moeaki Fotuaika was penalised for a professional foul at the ruck in front of his own posts and was sent to the sin-bin.

Gold Coast held firm in the defensive set and kicked clear to kill as much time as possible.

The half ended perfectly for the Titans as Don made up for his previous error with an interception off a pass from Niu and the winger ran 60 metres for his second right on the hooter.

Taylor converted to make it 0-22 at the break.

HALF-TIME: Brisbane Broncos 0-22 Gold Coast Titans

After the Broncos were more than likely given a grilling from Anthony Seibold, they knew they had to score first, and they did just that.

Nice minutes into the second period, Ben Te’o picked up a short ball from the ruck and crashed over after a little bit of footwork got him past the defence.

A few minutes later, Anthony Milford was penalised for a ball strip with more than one tacklers on Keegan Hipgrave.

This allowed Taylor to add two further points and push the Titan’s lead to 18 points with 26 minutes remaining.

After two back-to-back penalties and an unsuccessful captain’s challenge, the Broncos made sure to punish the Titans, and cut the deficit once again.

Brodie Croft dribbled a kick across the floor and Herbie Farnworth raced onto the ball and dived on top to score his first NRL try.

The centre then converted his own try to make it 12-24.

Another penalty to the Titans was converted by Taylor, which pushed them back out to a 14-point lead.

With just under ten minutes remaining, Tom Dearden attacked the line and threw a looping pass out to Xavier Coates, who dived over to score.

Unfortunately for Seibold’s side, the Titan’s were obstructed by Pangai Junior standing in the defensive line and the try was disallowed.

The Broncos season was optimised with six minutes to go, as they were about to win a penalty in their favour for offside, but Corey Oates rant at the referee meant the penalty was reversed, and the winger was sent to the sin-bin.

Just three tackles later, Taylor and Adam Fogarty combined to push the ball to Phillip Sami who did enough to beat the tackle of Coates, and the winger grounded the ball in the left-hand corner to seal the victory for the visitors.

The Broncos were also down to 11-players after they didn’t replace Matt Lodge before making their eighth interchange and the sin-bin to Oates.

The game ended with the Broncos desperately trying to pick up a consolation try, but the ball hit the deck and the game was over.
