Championship Season Preview: Leigh Centurions

This has been a dramatic close season at Leigh, even more than normal.

John Duffy joined from Featherstone Rovers, and there were many legal threats from the Rovers about that incident. Alongside the long running sage of the last two contracted full-time players, there has been a lot of uncertainty around the Leigh Sports Village this year.

Despite all of this though, there have been a lot of popular incomers at the Centurions. Most of that is down to the influential and popular former Leigh half-back Duffy, who has assembled a squad with strong Leigh links.

Now a part-time club again, Leigh have managed to recruit a group of players that, on paper, look capable of challenging for a play-off spot.

These players include Martyn Ridyard, Tom Spencer and Jonny Pownall.

Young players such as Oliver Russell and Josh Woods have also come in on loan and play in a side that will play and entertaining brand of rugby.

Duffy talks about the town of Leigh with such a sense of pride, as well as the supporters. This has earned him some credit from the terraces, as they are after some much needed optimism after a dismal 2018.

A small squad of just 21 could still be increased but if injuries are picked up then the Centurions could once again be faced with taking just 13 players to a game, as they did at Dewsbury at the end of last season.

Whether the change to part-time, a new coach and a load of fresh faces leads to success though we wait to see. Given this is Leigh though, whatever happens this season it will no doubt be entertaining.
